FARMINGTON HILLS — State Rep. Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills), the incoming House Democratic Leader, joined former State Trooper David DeVries and members of the community to designate a portion of I-696 in Farmington Hills as the “Trooper Vicki Moreau DeVries Memorial Highway” in remembrance of Michigan State Trooper DeVries’ unwavering commitment to public service. Trooper DeVries sadly lost her life in the line of duty in 1982 while returning home after gathering evidence during an undercover narcotics operation. Trooper DeVries was the first female Michigan State Police trooper to fall in the line of duty and will be the first female law enforcement officer in Michigan to be recognized in the Memorial Highway Act. During the ceremony, her husband David DeVries and partner on duty, Bob Muldore, gave moving accounts of Trooper DeVries’ professional courage and what she meant to the people that cared about her.
In 2017, Greig introduced House Bill 4828 to dedicate a section of the highway in her honor, which was signed into law by the governor earlier this year.
“Trooper DeVries exemplified the very best of what it means to devote one’s life to public service,” Greig said. “Thirty-six years ago, her life was cut tragically short in the line of duty; I’m proud to stand here today with Trooper DeVries’ husband, David, to commemorate her service with this dedication. While nothing we do can come close to the sacrifice she made for the people of Michigan, I believe this memorial will inspire others to learn about Trooper DeVries and her remarkable life of giving back to the community.”
