GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 22, 2025 — State Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) is proud to have supported House Bill 4392, bringing more than $5.4 million in state funding to Kent County for parks, trails and outdoor recreation projects. The investment comes from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, which supports public outdoor spaces across the state. These investments will make it easier and safer for people to stay active and access public parks and spaces outdoors with friends and family.
“Investing in our parks and trails means investing in the health and well-being of our neighbors,” Fitzgerald said. “This funding will improve parks and outdoor spaces across Kent County, making our communities safer, more accessible and more attractive for families.”
In Grand Rapids, funds will go toward improving a popular bike park. Planned upgrades include better lighting, bike racks, shelter space with power and other features that improve safety and accessibility — making it easier for cyclists and families to enjoy the park year-round.
Projects in Caledonia, Sparta and Kentwood will provide facility improvements for the comfort and safety of patrons, as well as greater access to local waterways and trail networks.
“These investments will help continue Kent County’s rise as a premier place to reside in Michigan,” Fitzgerald continued. “People are more selective than ever about where they want to live, and public investments like these are exactly what will make West Michigan more attractive and competitive.”
House Bill 4392 supports outdoor projects across Michigan, with a total of $94.1 million in funding statewide. More than $52 million of that comes from local governments and community partners contributing matching funds.
