Democratic Floorleader condemns proposed cuts to critical health care and affordability programs

LANSING, Mich., Aug. 29, 2025 — On Tuesday, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill, House Bill 4706, which aims to slash approximately $6 billion in critical services that Michiganders depend on — including for maternal health, food assistance, public safety and other affordability programs. Following D.C. Republicans’ playbook, the House Republican budget balances itself on the backs of families, kids and working people. After voting no, Democratic Floorleader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) issued the following statement:

“Michigan House Republicans rammed through a budget that, quite frankly, should tell Michiganders that they can’t count on them to be responsible and deliver positive results for our families and our communities.

“The job of the state legislature is to ensure that we have the building blocks for an economy that not only ensures people get by but get ahead, to create an education system that helps students excel and not struggle for support, and that places a priority on our health and safety — not on keeping Michiganders sick and unsafe.”
