LANSING, Mich., Jan. 13, 2023 — Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) announced yesterday the chairs and members of the Michigan House of Representatives’ standing committees, subcommittees and appropriations subcommittees. State Rep. John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) has been appointed chair of the Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee and member of the Committees on Insurance and Financial Services; Health Policy; Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure; and Agriculture.

“I’m eager to begin work on these committees, especially since they are connected to policy areas that directly affect West Michigan residents and local small businesses,” Fitzgerald said. “Committees are in place to create, define and advance bills that ideally will become laws — the very laws that can change the day-to-day lives of everyday working folks in West Michigan and beyond, and so, I take my work on committees and my position as a representative very seriously. It’s my job to represent the values of our residents, to bring their values and needs to Lansing and champion for them. The 83rd District is a special place, and the people of Wyoming and Grand Rapids are remarkable — that’s why I will be our community’s most enthusiastic and tenacious advocate.”

Before joining the House, Fitzgerald served as city council member at-large in the city of Wyoming. He brings his experience in municipal matters with him to his committee work, in order to create policies that enhance education, provide tax credits to working-class residents and secure social justice reforms.
