Democratic Floor Leader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) ceremoniously takes his oath of office into the 103rd Legislature at the Michigan State Capitol Building on Jan. 8, 2025, in Lansing.

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 8, 2025 — As the Michigan House of Representatives convened for the first session of the 103rd Legislature today, new leadership for the House Democrats took to the floor. To commemorate the first session of the year, Democratic Floor Leader John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming), issued the following statement:

“Today, House Democrats affirmed their commitment to building up the people of Michigan during our time in the 103rd Legislature, and beyond. When my colleagues and I stepped out onto the house floor, we did so with the knowledge of knowing we have promises to keep to the people of Michigan — a responsibility to not only amplify the voices of our communities, but to listen, put action behind our words and vote for their best interests.

“As Democratic floor leader, I will be fighting alongside my colleagues for a Legislature that puts people over politics and prioritizes policy that builds Michigan up. This term, House Democrats are listening first, fighting for change and voting with dignity. We are keeping our promise to move Michigan forward.”
