LANSING – In the wake of news that the city of Flint is in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act due to elevated TTHM levels in 2014, Senate Democratic Leader Jim Ananich (D-Flint), state Representative Sheldon Neeley(D-Flint) and state Representative Phil Phelps (D-Flushing) issued the following statements:
“Clean, safe drinking water is a basic need, and I will do everything in my power to help ensure Flint residents don’t have to worry about what’s coming out of their tap,” Ananich said. “Along with my counterparts in the House, I am reaching out to state officials in an effort to uncover opportunities for legislative solutions to the city’s water problems.”
As a former Flint City Councilman of the Sixth Ward, Rep. Neeley has been a staunch advocate for constituents in the community, and will closely monitor and require updates from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), as it relates to ongoing water issues inside the city of Flint.
“I will continue our fight, as long as it takes, to make sure people have clean and safe drinking water. As we continue to support water improvement for the residents of Flint, there is no question quality of life is a number one priority,” said Neeley.
The Flint City Council will hold two committee meetings Wednesday on the issue. The Public Works Committee will meet at 5 p.m., and the Planning and Development Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Both will be held in the committee room of Flint City Council Chambers and are open to the public.
