HIGHLAND PARK — Highland Park city officials announced this week that they had discovered significantly elevated lead levels in the water of nine out of 36 homes during voluntary testing. The city is offering free water testing to Highland Park residents, and has recommended running water to flush out pipelines and using filters or cold water when drinking, cooking or preparing baby formula. In response, state Rep. LaTanya Garrett (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“The wellbeing of the families within our community is my highest priority. I will continue working with both state and local officials to ensure that the residents of Highland Park are provided every resource they need to keep themselves safe while we work diligently to address this matter. I will not allow our neighbors here or anywhere else in the state to endure another water crisis like the families of Flint have had to face for the last several years.”
