LANSING — Today, state Rep. Alex Garza (D-Taylor) was named an assistant House Democratic floor leader for the 2019-2020 legislative term. Rep. Garza is serving his first term representing the 12th House District. Prior to his election, Rep. Garza served on the Taylor City Council from November 2013 to the end of last year, and was the youngest and first person of color elected to local office in the city’s history.
“Michiganders are demanding that we reduce auto insurance rates, uplift public education and empower working people, and I’m grateful to be part of the leadership team charged with providing real solutions to these issues,” Rep. Garza said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the people of Michigan, and I plan to hit the ground running to provide Michigan’s families the relief and support they need.”
As assistant Democratic floor leader, Garza will be working directly with Democratic Floor Leader Yousef Rahbi (D-Ann Arbor) to direct House Democrats’ legislative priorities during session. Rep. Garza previously worked for both former state Reps. Stephanie Chang and Rashida Tlaib as a legislative aide. He attended both the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Baker College, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and an associate’s degree in business management, respectively.
