LANSING — The Michigan House of Representatives held their annual Sept. 11 ceremony yesterday to commemorate those who have served local communities, the state of Michigan and our nation. State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) hosted former state House Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms Lillie Lester as her guest for the event. Ms. Lester was the first female Sergeant-at-Arms in Michigan. Now 97 years old, Lester’s work at the Capitol in Lansing spanned two decades during the 1960s and 1970s.

“I am honored to have been accompanied by Ms. Lester as my guest to recognize her service to the citizens of our state,” said Gay-Dagnogo. “Her commitment to Michigan and trailblazing-mindset serves as an excellent call for perseverance in the face of adversity, like those first responders that rushed into harm’s way 18 years ago. As we remember the tragedy of Sept. 11, we honor all heroes who run towards danger, not away.”

During her time serving at the Capitol, Ms. Lester was also one of the founding members of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.
