LANSING — Dan Gilbert, Chairman of Quicken Loans, is in the process of forming a ballot initiative committee to mount a petition drive for an auto insurance proposal that will reportedly closely mirror the Republican auto insurance plans recently passed in the House and Senate. In response, state Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“As a lifelong Detroiter, I am thoroughly disappointed with Dan Gilbert’s latest push for an insurance company handout instead of a plan that dramatically lowers auto insurance rates. Gilbert's plan doesn't address the needs of Detroit residents who have suffered the most from high insurance rates by failing to address discrimination in rate-setting, the single greatest factor that leads to out-of-control and unaffordable insurance rates. Detroiters deserve better than lackluster plans from the legislature or a billionaire at the ballot box. We need real reform that dramatically lowers rates and ends discriminatory practices that keep many Detroit drivers from being able to afford the coverage they need.”
