“As a former DFT member, I am proud of the unified, cohesive and common-sense message that 4,000 of our members sent to Detroit’s teachers and students — safety first. Teachers have a responsibility to protect their students, and despite the expressed direction of the district, teachers voted overwhelmingly to uphold that duty. We realize some parents and families need some form of childcare, and children with special needs will require greater support. We must realign our reopening plans with parents, community stakeholders, educators, medical and mental health professionals at the table. I am confident we can develop a plan to meet those needs and keep students, teachers, staff and our communities safe this fall.”
