“This is a great disappointment considering that we have citizens who have been waiting for almost two months for their unemployment benefits during this COVID-19 crisis. I understand that the current staff is doing the best they can. Still, I am concerned about the outdated software and lack of needed additional staff to adequately process the more than 1.3 million claims. While I realize that Michigan is not alone in the failed processing of UIA claims, it is unacceptable that we have not found a way to provide our citizens with the support they deserve. My office alone has received close to 500 complaints via emails, calls and social media. It is exactly this type of dysfunction and economic hardship that propel citizens who have nowhere else to go towards payday loans.”
