LANSING — Yesterday, House Republicans approved Senate Bill 1176 today which will exempt nonprofit entities capable of making political contributions from having to publicly disclose the personal information of their donors. All Democrats voted against the dark money proposal. In response to its passage, state Rep. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) issued the following statement:

“There are 29 hate groups in Michigan whose donations will be protected under this law. Regardless of a candidate’s decision to work with such groups, Michiganders deserve the opportunity to find out if an organization that despises their existence is supporting a candidate on their ballot. We cannot allow hate groups to operate in the darkness here in Michigan. It is time to end this senseless race to the bottom and live up to the standards of transparency and accountability that the people of Michigan demand.”
