LANSING, Mich., Aug. 17, 2022 — Members of the House Democratic Caucus held a press conference today to denounce the lack of legislative session while Michiganders are paying the salaries of their representatives to tackle the issues affecting them. From high prices on gas and groceries to the threat of reproductive health care being taken away, Democrats have legislation ready to move, but Lansing Republicans who set the calendar won’t come back to work from their summer vacation. After the event, state Rep. Carol Glanville (D-Walker) issued the following statement:

“The Republican majority is off on vacation, while House Democrats are here advocating for the rights of Michiganders. But for us to be able to do our jobs, we need to have the opportunity to pass legislation. For instance, House Bill 5289 is an essential piece of legislation that we need to move forward. This bill takes the horrific 1931 abortion ban off the books entirely. This would free the people of Michigan from this ancient tyranny over their most private health care decisions and protect reproductive rights. Republican calls for “modernizing” the law are just a smokescreen for keeping it in place. Let’s get back in session to do what’s right for the people of Michigan.”
