LANSING, Mich., June 9, 2022 — Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced today that Grand Rapids Police Officer Chris Schurr will face second-degree murder charges in the death of Patrick Lyoya. State Rep. Carol Glanville (D-Walker) issued the following statement:
“First and foremost, my thoughts are with the Lyoya Family, and I want to send my most sincere condolences. While there is absolutely no making up for a life so tragically lost, I am relieved that the prosecutor is pursuing justice and has charged Schurr. During this time, I also can’t help but think about how essential it is for law enforcement to foster and build healthy relationships with communities of color, just as it is our duty as lawmakers to pass legislation in support of those efforts.”
