Dear Neighbor,
Hi, I’m Jason. I have the privilege to serve as your state representative for Washtenaw, Wayne and Oakland counties. Here is some information that I hope you will find helpful, including some updates and news from your state government.

A Future for Fishing
I grew up on a commercial fishery in Pinconning, and I am the proud son of generations of fishermen. My family operated Pinconning Fishery, a commercial fishing business on Saginaw Bay, for decades. While my family is no longer in the fishing industry, I am committed to updating our state fishing laws to ensure a future for fishing families in our state. That’s why, with broad bipartisan support, I introduced HB 5108. This legislation:
- Ensures sport fishing remains a top priority of this state.
- Supports the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) in managing resources like water and fish at the highest level possible.
- Helps Michigan’s commercial fishing industry offer more diversity and more opportunity for citizens to access fresh fish from Michigan waters of the Great Lakes.
Recognizing Merchant Marines
Continuing with our water-based theme … Recently, I gave testimony on HB 4723 in the House Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure Committee. My legislation would add section 803s to the Michigan vehicle code to include a Merchant Marine license plate option for individuals who were or are currently a member of the United States Merchant Marines.
While Michigan has honored every branch of our military services, there currently exists no plate to honor our Merchant Mariners who have been an important part of our Michigan’s economy since the original French fur traders and now into the modern day with Great Lakes cargo vessels.
Clean Energy and Climate Rally
Last week, I rallied with the Michigan League of Conservation Voters (MLCV) for:
- Transitioning Michigan to 100% carbon-free electricity generation.
- Holding Michigan utility companies accountable.
- Good-paying green energy jobs.
It’s simple — the time for climate action is now. I want you to know that you have a strong advocate for climate justice in Lansing. I’m going to do everything I can to put the people of Michigan before corporate interests and protect our natural resources.
Yours in service,
State Representative Jason Morgan
