LANSING, Mich., April 18, 2023 – On Michigan State University’s campus last Thursday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the first firearm safety reforms of the 102nd Legislature into law. Among these laws was state Rep. Jaime Churches’ (D-Wyandotte) first bill, HB 4138, requiring background checks for all gun sales. In the wake of February’s shooting at Michigan State University and the shooting at Oxford High School in November 2021, these laws are commonsense and imperative to addressing gun violence in the state.
“It is our collective responsibility as lawmakers to keep our community members healthy and safe,” Churches said. “This legislation provides a foundation to help build a safer Michigan by modeling responsible gun ownership. As state representative for Downriver, I will continue to advocate for reasonable, commonsense policies to protect our communities from gun violence.”
