Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation last week to require background checks for the purchase of any firearm and gun owners to safely store firearms where minors cannot access them. These bills were part of an 11-bill package to help prevent firearm-involved accidents, suicides and intentional shootings.
Mandatory background checks and safe storage laws are long overdue steps to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, domestic abusers and children. Nearly 90% of Michiganders, including a majority of gun owners, support this commonsense legislation to help keep our students and communities safe.
