GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 28, 2025 — On Tuesday, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill, House Bill 4706, which strips billions from the programs and services Michiganders rely on. By gutting investments in housing, community development, public health and workforce training, Republicans are balancing their budget on the backs of working families and vulnerable communities. After House Republicans passed their budget, state Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement:
“The budget passed by House Republicans eliminates funding from housing, community investments and public safety — undermining the stability of communities across our state, weakening essential services and putting vulnerable people at greater risk. It strips away job training and workforce development programs at the very moment Michigan should be preparing workers for the industries of tomorrow, and it rolls back investments in environmental protection and public health that keep our neighborhoods safe and habitable. These are not the choices of a government committed to progress; they leave families less secure and communities less stable.
“No one wins under this budget. These cuts go beyond so-called fiscal responsibility and neglect our duty as public trustees and servants of the people of Michigan. This proposal reflects neither the needs of our communities nor the public mandate given to this House. Deep cuts to Medicaid and health care access would push families already struggling to make ends meet even further behind. Michiganders deserve leadership that puts their well-being first. I will continue to stand firm for a budget that safeguards public health, expands opportunity and strengthens the communities that make Michigan home.”
