GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 14, 2024 — State Rep. Kristian Grant (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement regarding the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident involving the killing of Samuel Sterling when he was struck by an unmarked Michigan State Police car on April 17th:

“As a mother, my heart is with the Sterling family and all those in our community who are grieving this profound loss. The pain of losing a loved one in such circumstances is unimaginable, and it compels us to demand change and accountability at all levels. Too often we find ourselves offering thoughts and prayers that, tragically, cannot bring a family’s loved one back. We must strive for a justice system that ensures everyone is treated fairly.

“Law enforcement should be held to the highest standards when they pledge to serve and protect. Furthermore, our community members should never be in fear of their life while in the presence of police. With the Michigan State Police investigation concluded, it is now turned over to the Attorney General’s office for review. I urge a thorough and expeditious examination, ensuring that all involved are held accountable. I stand with the Sterling family in their quest for justice and pledge to remain actively involved as the case unfolds. My office is open and ready to support the family and our community during this challenging time.”
