LANSING Sept. 27, 2019 — Court of Claims Judge Cynthia Stephens ruled today the provision of Public Act 608 of 2018 limiting signature collection in petition drives to only 15 percent coming from any one U.S. House District was unconstitutional. In response, House Democratic Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:
“House Democrats fought this legislation so hard last December not only because of our commitment to safeguarding the constitutional right of every Michigander to participate fully in the democratic process, but because we already knew then what Judge Stephens affirmed today: legislation trampling on our citizens’ rights would not hold up in court. This ruling will help ensure that every voice is heard and every signature is counted in Michigan.”
