LANSING, Mich., Sept. 20, 2023 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently announced that over $5.1 million will go towards protecting Battle Creek’s pension fund. These grants will protect the pensions of public employees and are meant to prevent local governments from cutting vital funds for past public servants. In response, state Rep. Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek) issued the following statement:

“Seniors who put in their years as public servants should be able to trust the security that a pension represents. The public employees of the city of Battle Creek deserve to see the benefits they earned. This is welcome news for our local retirees and all Battle Creek taxpayers.”

Haadsma voted earlier this year to repeal the retirement tax, which Gov. Whitmer signed into law, saving all seniors an average of $1,000 a year.
