State Rep. Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek) was joined by Superintendent Becky Jones of Marshall Public Schools and Derek Allen of Starr Commonwealth at the Michigan Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024.

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 24, 2024 —Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered the State of the State address and her agenda for improving Michigan’s education system, growing our economy and reducing the cost of living.

“People in Calhoun County want good jobs, top-notch schools and vibrant communities. We made great progress in 2023, but we can do more,” said state Rep. Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek). “We need to build on our successes, expand opportunities and support working families.”

Over the past year, Rep. Haadsma and his colleagues in Lansing have phased out state taxes on retirement income, increased tax refunds for working families, funded no-cost meals for all public school kids and developed local economies with targeted investments in growing industries.

“We have lowered costs at the pharmacy counter, bolstered the economy and ensured Michigan is a healthier place to live, but we won’t quit working to make sure every Michigander has the opportunity for a bright future,” Haadsma continued.
