LANSING — State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) introduced House Bill 6276, which would amend the Michigan Strategic Fund Act to require corporations that are receiving public funds from the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) to pay their employees a living wage.
“Corporations that are collecting public money need to be held accountable for how that money gets spent,” said Rep. Hammoud. “When businesses ask us for public funds, they are usually doing so with a promise of job creation — but the goal shouldn’t just be to create jobs, it should be to create good-paying jobs. That means paying workers a living wage.”
Specifically, HB 6276 would require businesses that are receiving project funding from the MSF to pay their employees an hourly wage of at least $15. The intent is to provide workers an income necessary to meet basic needs for themselves and their family.
“The people of Michigan deserve to know that their tax dollars are being spent wisely,” said Rep. Hammoud. “If you are a business taking our tax dollars, then you should be using this public money to invest in your business, pay a fair wage to your hardworking employees and attract new talent.”
