LANSING — State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) has introduced a bill that would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code (Public Act 300 of 1949) to increase the maximum allowable height on motorcycle and moped handlebars.
A constituent proposed the idea, and the bill would simply change the current law for handlebar height from 15 inches to 30 inches. Several other states have already eased or even eliminated this restriction. Additionally, many motorcycles on the road today may not even be compliant with current state law.
“Motorcycles have changed and evolved in several ways over the years, and customization is popular within the rider community,” said Hammoud. “As a state based on the automotive industry, why not promote the manufacturing and riding of these motorcycles in Michigan? My goal is to ease unnecessary restrictions, increase these manufacturing and service jobs, and bring our standards in line with other states.”
