LANSING — State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) introduced House Resolution 304 which urges the United States government to publicly and formally call for a solution to Yemen’s internal conflict, condemn the fighting and war crimes, and recognize the suffering of the Yemeni people and their desperate need for humanitarian aid. The resolution also calls for a system to help Yemeni civilians who have fled to other countries to be able to enter the United States if they have immediate family members as citizens residing here.
“This humanitarian crisis must come to an end, and this resolution demands that the federal government take action,” Hammoud said. “Between the fighting and the famine, aid is a long overdue necessity.”
The fighting in Yemen has been ongoing since March 2015, and since then, civilians casualties continue to rise as a result of famine, cholera and warfare. There are millions of civilians, including women and children, who are suffering from preventable tragedies.
“I’m hopeful that the United States will be able to increase its aid to Yemen, because that would mean civilians will be able to receive medical care, food and clean drinking water, and find a means to rebuild their homes and their lives,” said Hammoud. “Our decision — to act or not to act — will be felt by those millions of people. We must not delay in addressing this humanitarian crisis.”
