“I am disappointed the Capitol Commission decided to abandon their duty to prohibit firearms in the Capitol by creating another committee, of the same members, to delay taking any real action. The thought that armed individuals, including militia groups, are legally allowed to storm the Capitol in an effort to try to intimidate elected officials is disturbing, and could one day have disastrous consequences.
“Attempts of armed intimidation have no place in our state, let alone inside our state’s Capitol. For legislators, staff and the many visitors—including students—to the building, our Capitol must serve as a safe, welcoming place. With many examples on social media of individuals making threats of violence against the governor and other public officials, a decision needs to be made quickly and decisively, before it’s too late.”
