LANSING — House Democrats announced legislation at a press conference yesterday to reduce the undue strain many families in the state are facing due to job insecurity, stagnant wages and rising costs. In response, state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn), who sponsored legislation in the package, issued the following statement:

“It is our responsibility as legislators to cultivate an environment where workers are able to receive fair pay and benefits, which would contribute to the growth of local economies. Instead, workers are robbed of that ability by corporate greed which widens the income gap. My bill would require that any employee who loses their job as a result of things out of their control, like factory shutdowns or mass layoffs, receives severance pay, ensuring they can continue to support their families while searching for a new job.”
