LANSING — House Republicans approved Senate Bill 1176 today which will exempt nonprofit entities capable of making political contributions from having to publicly disclose the personal information of their donors. All Democrats voted against the dark money proposal. In response to its passage, state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) issued the following statement:
“With this vote, the legislative majority has made it clear they are morally bankrupt, subservient to the whims of their wealthy dark money donors, and have all but forgotten Michigan’s working families. This bill wasn’t about providing equal protections; it was about ensuring the wealthy elite can continue to silently sway the outcomes of our elections. At a time when the integrity of our political processes are under so much justified scrutiny, this bill only serves to further undermine public trust in our elections.”
