LANSING, Mich., Feb 1, 2022 — Today, state Rep. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) introduced a resolution to amend the Michigan constitution to prohibit the taxation of retirement or pension benefits. Repeal of the pension tax has found popular and bipartisan support. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called for ending the tax, and legislators, like Hertel, have quickly started working to make this plan a reality. Hertel issued the following statement:
“I am proud to work on this bipartisan and common-sense legislation. As the Michigan economy recovers, we must take a serious look at tax relief in our state and ensure that it benefits those who need it most. Our seniors have worked and contributed to our state for decades. Let’s eliminate this tax burden they have shouldered and allow them to enjoy the benefits of a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice.”
