LANSING, Mich., June 28, 2024 — State Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) is pleased to announce the successful passage of House Bill 5827, which extends unemployment insurance benefits from 20 to 26 weeks. This legislative victory marks a significant step forward in providing critical support to Michigan’s working families during times of economic uncertainty.

“This bill is about more than changes to the unemployment system; it’s about showing our workers that we stand with them,” Hill said. “This legislation makes sure workers in the building trades—who literally work themselves out of a job when projects are completed—can receive continued support. Getting this bill signed into law will keep talented people in the construction industry when we need them most.”

House Bill 5827 now moves to the Senate for consideration. Rep. Hill urges her colleagues in the Senate to act swiftly and pass this vital legislation.
