LANSING, Mich., May 8, 2024 — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives passed its budget. From attracting businesses that create more jobs, supporting working families, and helping students achieve success — the proposed budget will make opportunities for Michiganders promising and plentiful. Among its key provisions are significant investments in local governments, housing, child care, education, and public infrastructure. Notably, the budget includes $200 million for the development of affordable housing across the state. After voting on the budget, state Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette), majority vice chair of the House Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Committee, issued the following statement:
“From investments in local government to housing, this budget is all about strengthening the bedrocks in our lives. It prioritizes working people with $200 million for housing development, addressing the urgent need for affordable homes to bring talent to our towns. It also bolsters our recruitment and retention of corrections officers by expanding pension benefits, ensuring financial security for those dedicated to public service. I’m also proud to be continuing our substantial investments in public education, mental health and rural transportation. This budget will help us build resilient hometowns, where our way of life will continue to thrive into the future.”
