LANSING Mich. May 4, 2023 — On Jan. 6, 2021, the Proud Boys, the far-right neo-fascist organization, then led by Enrique Tarrio, fomented an attack on the U.S. Capitol. Four members of the organization were convicted today of seditious conspiracy for plotting to keep then-President Donald J. Trump in power after his election defeat. Following the announcement, state Reps. Kara Hope (D-Holt) and Jimmie Wilson, Jr. (D-Ypsilanti) issued the following statement:

“We are pleased to see democracy prevail today. Those who sought to overthrow the government have been brought to justice and will now face the consequences of their violent actions. Michiganders know the disturbing pattern of conspiracy and intimidation all too well, when armed extremists used our state’s Capitol as a dress rehearsal on April 30, 2020. Much like the insurrection on Jan. 6, armed militia men arrived in droves to our Capitol, threatening legislators and law enforcement. Today’s ruling is a victory over the insurrectionists who threaten our state, our country and the foundations of our democracy.”
