LANSING — Ahead of Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal this week, House Democrats have released a video announcing their priorities for the 2018-19 fiscal year budget, calling on the governor and his administration to return the state’s focus to the people of Michigan, not lobbyists or corporate donors.
“A state’s budget is a values statement, and for the last seven years we’ve seen plainly what Republican leadership’s values are,” said House Democratic Leader Sam Singh (D-East Lansing). “For too long the budget has been used as a tool to pad corporate profits, and the state is worse because of it. Instead, we have the opportunity now to craft a budget that gives working families the freedom to build the life they want. That means building better roads, improving our schools, and giving small businesses the resources they need to thrive in their community.”
In a video released today, House Democrats outlined their vision for Michigan, including improving our infrastructure, providing students with the resources they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond, expanding broadband access to connect the state and attract business, and increasing skilled worker training to strengthen the state’s economy.
“For the last seven years Republican leadership has rubber stamped tax cuts for their wealthy friends and special interest groups at the expense of Michigan taxpayers,” said state Rep. Fred Durhal III, the Democratic vice chair of Appropriations. “That isn’t just irresponsible, it’s immoral. This is the opportunity to begin righting that wrong, and that’s why we’re calling on Gov. Snyder and his administration to propose a budget that gives every hardworking Michigander the same opportunity to choose their own path. House Democrats will fight every step of the way for a budget that does.”
