LANSING, Mich., July 11, 2022 — Organizers for the Reproductive Freedom for All petition delivered signatures to the Bureau of Elections today. The petition would amend the Michigan Constitution to ensure that no one goes to prison for providing safe medical care as well as ensure access to a broad range of reproductive health care, including abortion.
“This is a tremendous grassroots groundswell of support for protecting reproductive freedom in the state of Michigan. Today’s signature count is a staggering show of support for ensuring Michigan is a state that constitutionally protects the reproductive freedom Americans have counted on for nearly 50 years,” said House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township). “What the volunteers with the initiative have accomplished is a historic outpouring of support, and in the legislature we will continue our fight to protect these rights and push for the passage of the Reproductive Health Act in the House.”
“The organizers and volunteers who have put so much work, sweat, and passion into this process should be incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished; we’re certainly proud of what they’ve done for the rights of Michiganders,” said state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia), chair of the Progressive Women’s Caucus. “They’re delivering the most signatures collected for any ballot initiative in the history of our state. That is an incredibly significant statement of support from the people of Michigan demanding their rights be respected and protected.”
