Democratic lawmakers defend personal rights and freedoms as Republicans push divisive agenda
House Democrats stand at their Protecting Rights, Defending Freedoms press conference on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, at the Anderson House Office Building in Lansing.
LANSING, Mich., Feb. 25, 2025 — State Reps. Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park) and Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor), alongside fellow House Democrats, held a press conference today to denounce a resolution introduced by House Republicans that urges the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark 2015 decision guaranteeing marriage equality for same-sex couples.
“At a time when Michiganders are looking to their leaders to address pressing issues like lowering costs and protecting our economy, House Republicans are choosing to focus on undermining the personal freedoms of Michigan residents,” McFall said. “This resolution is not only a blatant attempt to roll back the clock on civil rights, but it is also out of step with the values and priorities of our state.”
Democratic lawmakers stressed that the resolution is not just an attack on LGBTQ+ rights, but also part of a broader effort to undermine personal freedoms and divert attention from the real issues facing Michigan families. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting civil rights, strengthening the economy and expanding opportunities for all residents — priorities that stand in sharp contrast to the GOP’s divisive and regressive agenda.
“Love is not partisan, commitment is not partisan, and the right to marry should not be partisan,” Morgan said. “We refuse to stand by while extremists attempt to divide people and strip away the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. House Democrats are committed to defending the fundamental freedoms of all Michiganders and focused on kitchen table issues for struggling families — not pointless, homophobic attacks.”
