• The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many of the policies Michigan Democrats continue to diligently work toward to the forefront, including paid sick leave, unemployment benefits, access to health care and mental health services, investments in our public education systems and more.
  • As our state begins planning to safely reopen, Michigan House Democrats have a comprehensive legislative plan to address critical challenges, provide essential support and strengthen our communities and democracy.
  • The “Michigan Strong: A Stronger Future Starts Today” plan focuses on seven pillars of House Democrats priorities to help the people of Michigan pick up the pieces of their lives after this pandemic and provide a foundation for stronger futures.

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan House Democrats today unveiled their policy agenda, Michigan Strong: A Stronger Future Starts Today, a comprehensive plan focused on rebuilding and strengthening the state from the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and preparing for future COVID-19 peaks or other disasters.

The House Democrats’ plan not only remedies the issues made evident throughout the pandemic — including access to health care and mental health services, paycheck protections, worker safety and confidence, safeguards for basic needs, resources for our first responders and educating our children outside the classroom — but aims to strengthen our state’s most vital sectors.

“The question on everyone’s mind as we begin to slowly emerge from the COVID-19 crisis is ‘where do we go from here?’” said House Democratic Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills). “House Democrats know what must be done to get our state back on track safely — and we will continue to diligently work until Michiganders are back on their feet. This is the plan that will get us there.”

While Michigan Democrats remain focused on delivering long-term solutions to our most critical challenges for Michiganders, our Republican colleagues continue to risk public health with unnecessary sessions held solely for political gamesmanship and push to hastily reopen our economy on behalf of their wealthy supporters.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the greatest challenges we’ve faced in a generation — one that has upended the lives of Michigan families in ways no one could have imagined,” said Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn). “Michiganders have weathered this storm with the strength, tenacity and toughness that defines us. The Michigan Strong: A Stronger Future Starts Today will help the people of our state build a stronger future.”

Notwithstanding the decisive, swift and strong leadership from Governor Whitmer, it’s clear that Michigan was sorely unprepared for a crisis of this magnitude. House Democrats are optimistic that we’re coming out of the worst of this pandemic. It is now time that we deliver real, long-term solutions to help Michiganders begin rebuilding their lives and to prepare our state for future disasters when they occur.
