Smart, responsible investments pay dividends for state’s economy
LANSING, Mich., May 18, 2023 — House Democratic leaders are celebrating today’s news that Michigan’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.8% in April, the lowest level in three years and a rate only seen three times in the last 50 years.
“The numbers don’t lie — Michigan is stronger than ever,” said Speaker of the House Joe Tate (D-Detroit). “Fiscally responsible tax cuts, investments in housing and community development, and smart job-creation strategies are paying dividends for people across the state.”
Michigan added 18,000 jobs last month, for a total labor force of 4.9 million people. That equates to 61,000 jobs added year over year. The news comes on the heels of several major economic development project announcements, with employers choosing Michigan over sites in other states, bringing billions of dollars in investments and creating thousands of good-paying jobs.
“Our hard work attracting good-paying jobs to our state is paying off,” said state Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Township), chair of the House Appropriations Committee. “When we compete on a global scale and support small businesses throughout the state, Michigan wins.”
Also included in today’s news is the 12-month average Black unemployment rate for April is near a 20-year low.
“Expanding economic prosperity for every Michigander is our goal, and making sure marginalized communities are at the table is key,” said state Rep. Jason Hoskins (D-Southfield), chair of the House Economic Development and Small Business Committee. “I’m proud to be part of a legislative majority that is working to improve our local communities and the lives of all Michiganders, not just those who are already succeeding.”
