LANSING, Mich., May 6, 2021 – U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney has faced significant backlash from her own party after continually denouncing former President Trump’s lie surrounding November’s election and insistence that her Republican colleagues tell the truth about the January assault on the U.S. Capitol. In response, state Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“It isn’t easy to stand up to one’s own party. Disagreeing with your colleagues can set your career adrift in a sea of uncertainty, but that’s just what Rep. Liz Cheney and a select few other Republicans have done by calling out the Big Lie. We will likely never see eye to eye on the challenges facing our country or how to solve them, but she has demonstrated loyalty to democracy over her political party, and for that I applaud her.”
