DETROIT, Sept. 3, 2021 — Earlier this week, Texas enacted a new extreme abortion ban, making it illegal for someone to get an abortion if they are more than six weeks pregnant. This effectively eliminates the option to end a pregnancy for many people. The Supreme Court denied the request to stop the abortion ban from taking effect.

“We MUST stand up for our reproductive health and rights.  The United States Supreme Court literally overturned Roe versus Wade in Texas.  This is a dangerous precedence showing a disrespect for women and personal choice.  Those fighting against women’s rights to choose are many of the same hypocrites who fight against protecting the whole of our communities from COVID,” said state Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson (D-Detroit). “The truth of the matter is this Texas abortion ban only ends safe abortions. Many women don’t even know they are pregnant before six weeks, which means abortions will still happen under less safe and even dangerous circumstances. This would be detrimental to the health of women. The Supreme Court has shown us they are unwilling to stand up for what is right, but we cannot stay silent. I will continue to speak out against extreme measures that affect the reproductive health of women and work to put an end to attacks on our constitutional rights.”

Because of the Supreme Court’s decision, many other states are looking to enact similar legislation.
