LANSING, Mich., Sept. 16, 2021 — This week, state Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson (D-Detroit) introduced House Concurrent Resolution 12, which urges the U.S. Congress to enact legislation granting statehood to the people of Washington, D.C.

“For too long, the people of Washington, D.C., have had to bear the same responsibilities as the rest of us, without having the same rights that we do,” Johnson said. “They pay taxes, serve on juries and defend our nation abroad, but are denied the representation they deserve. It’s time for Congress to act. It’s time to grant the people of D.C. the same rights enjoyed by the rest of the 50 states.”

The concurrent resolution was referred to the House Government Operations Committee.
