DETROIT, Mich, Nov. 29, 2022 — On Nov. 19, five people were killed, and 25 others were injured, 19 of them by gunfire, in Colorado Springs when a gunman entered and fired upon the crowd in Club Q, an LGBTQ+ nightclub. Following the shooting, the gunman was charged with murder and could potentially be charged with a hate crime. Following the shooting, state Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson (D-Detroit) sent her support to the LGBTQ+ community in the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the recent shooting. This tragic attack, brought about by an individual’s hate of a group of people, cannot be ignored. I stand with the LGBTQ+ community and will do everything in my power to support this community, advocate for their rights and continue to fight against hatred and bigotry. Together, I hope we will be able to make the world safe for all people.”
