INKSTER — This weekend two mass shootings took place within 14 hours, first in El Paso, Texas, then in Dayton, Ohio. These shootings cost at least 31 people their lives. In response, state Rep. Jewell Jones (D-Inkster) issued the following statement:
“The growing death toll from these preventable tragedies becomes harder to stomach every day. We are lucky to have heroes like Glendon Oakley among us, but our failure to prevent the incident that made Mr. Oakley’s actions necessary is unacceptable. We must take concrete steps to prevent this trend from continuing. This includes passing ‘red-flag’ legislation as well as reexamining the way we rationalize and normalize these devastating events. Once again, Americans have had their lives taken by a person who was radicalized in part by the ongoing, racially-charged rhetoric that has become prevalent in our culture. As elected officials, we cannot rest until we have done everything in our power to stop this needless loss of life — both through legislative action and by holding those who refuse to name incidents like these for what they are — domestic terrorism — accountable."
