This month at the Capitol, the state budget has been my main focus. For me, it’s more than just numbers on a page — it’s a reflection of our shared values and priorities. I’m working hard to ensure the final budget invests in what matters most to the 82nd District: safe neighborhoods, quality schools, affordable housing and a stronger future for all of us.

Invocation 

In May, my office was able to deliver the invocation in the House chambers. It was an honor to be joined by special guest Reverend Dr. Willie A. Gholston II from First Community AME Church in Grand Rapids.

The work we do in the legislature touches the lives of all 10 million Michiganders and oftentimes even beyond that. Prayers for wisdom, guidance and justice are always needed!

Bipartisan Housing Panel

Young homebuilding professionals joined us in Lansing during the month of May to discuss how we can work together to address housing. It was great to join state Reps. Joe Tate and Parker Fairburn and Majority Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus as we talked about the housing issues facing Michiganders.

From zoning reform to smarter density, we need to break down outdated barriers that are driving up costs and holding back development in communities across the state. I’ll keep pushing for policies that make housing more accessible, more inclusive and more future-focused — for every Michigander.

Michigan Women’s Foundation Women to Watch Award

It was an honor to be named as a Michigan Women’s Foundation 2025 Woman to Watch. It was even more meaningful to be named with so many other women who are working to change our community for the better each day. Thank you to the foundation for all of the amazing work you do to make sure women in business have the resources and support they need to succeed. Congrats to everyone who was honored this year!


Grand Rapids Public Schools Visits the Capitol

It’s always a great time when my GRPS family comes to see me at the Capitol. My work on the GRPS school board was my first introduction to true policy impact and advocacy. Thank you all for continuing to advocate for our scholars not only in Grand Rapids, but also around the state! It was a pleasure to meet with GRPS during their advocacy day at the Capitol.

Legislative Update

In response to constituent requests each month, my office will highlight legislation that passed out of the Michigan House of Representatives. Here is a quick legislative snapshot for the month of May:

Bills I voted in support of:

  • House Bill 4328, which gives money to the Michigan State Police for storm disaster relief grants, specifically for local units of government in areas of the state that have experienced significant financial hardship caused by storm damage.
  • Senate Bills 99–100, which further codify the transparency and ethics requirements for gift-giving to public employees and officials. These bills were overwhelmingly supported by the voters who passed Prop 1 in 2022.

Bills I voted in opposition to:

  • House Resolution 91, which supported President Trump’s policies for emergency permitting Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac.
  • House Bills 4338 and 4339, which are an attack on local control, withholding revenue sharing dollars from municipal governments who don’t comply with President Trump’s extremist immigration policies.
