LANSING, Mich., June 18, 2020 — The Michigan House of Representatives approved House Bills 5761 and 5810 today to extend the summer property tax deadline for neighborhood businesses and eliminate late fees and penalties during declared states of emergency. The bills also ensure local governments and schools continue receiving funding during this time. After voting in favor of both bills, state Rep. Sheryl Kennedy (D-Davison) issued the following statement:
“Small and neighborhood businesses are the heart of our communities — they employ our families and neighbors, they drive our local economies and they make the places we call home a better place to live. This pandemic has had a devastating impact on all of us, but now we must do everything we can to limit the damage from spreading any further, and that’s exactly what these bills do. These simple measures allow us to give much needed flexibility to business affected by this crisis, while preserving funding for our schools and local governments.”
