State Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) delivers a speech on the House Floor in the Michigan Capitol Building.

NORTHVILLE, Mich., Aug. 29, 2024 — The Michigan Strategic Fund approved over $2 million in funding this week to redevelop a former horse racing track and Brownfield site in Northville. The funding will allow the city to remediate contaminated land and restore a river on the site, revitalizing 7.86 acres of land for city use. State Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth), who represents Northville, said he is happy to see this project allow for more development in the community.

“Restoring abandoned land not only improves the health of our community, but also creates greater economic opportunity,” Koleszar said. “This project will attract new businesses and good-paying jobs to our community, further investing in the longevity of Northville. I am excited for both the environmental and financial benefits this funding will bring.”

The project, known as the Downs Redevelopment Project, will also include the building of a recreational park next to the redeveloped site.

“I believe that improving public health does not end with remediating contaminated land. Creating opportunities for the community to enjoy that land is just as important — and this project makes sure of that,” Koleszar said. “I look forward to seeing this park become a place of leisure and community building for the people of Northville.”
