LANSING, Mich., Feb. 27, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her seventh State of the State Address before a joint legislative session yesterday. In her speech, the governor discussed her plan to lower costs for families ahead of looming tariffs, increase the workforce and deliver results for the people of Michigan. After the address, state Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) issued the following statement:

“Before Gov. Whitmer came into office, we ranked dead last in the nation in school funding growth. I greatly support the governor’s continued commitment to working with the Legislature to deliver historic funding levels for Michigan’s schools. While these record-levels of per-pupil funding are a crucial resource for getting kids on the track to academic achievement and lifelong success, we must ensure the budget is passed on time to ensure Michigan’s schools, teachers and students are immediately supported.

“This historic per-pupil funding will ensure parents can go to sleep at night knowing their kid’s school is equipped to give them the learning support they need every day — I remain dedicated to fighting to pass this budget before the July 1 deadline to give our kids the support they deserve.”
