State Representative Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) attends a rally for his bill, known as “Queenies Law, on April 25, 2024, on the steps of the Michigan Capitol Building.

LANSING, Mich., Sept., 6, 2024 — The Humane Society of Huron Valley announced that it will be honoring state Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) with the Legislator of the Year award on Friday, Nov. 8, at the organization’s annual “Compassionate Feast.” The award recognizes his outstanding work in advocating for legislation that protects animal welfare across Michigan. In response to the award announcement, Koleszar issued the following statement:

“I am deeply honored to be receiving the Legislator of the Year for my advocacy work to protect Michigan’s animals. The Humane Society of Huron Valley does essential work to ensure animals are treated with care, respect and dignity, and it has been a longstanding goal of mine to ensure Michigan’s laws reflect that mission.

Earlier this year, I introduced HB 4849, or ‘Queenie’s Law,’ to end painful experiments on dogs at Michigan’s public institutions. I hope to set a new precedent for humane treatment of animals in scientific research — one that ensures our furry friends are treated with kindness and empathy. I look forward to the day this bill crosses the finish line, and I want to thank the Humane Society for its unparalleled support in prioritizing animal welfare.”
