LANSING — Today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Directive that works to close the gender wage gap by barring employers from requesting the salary histories of potential new employees. In response, state Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy) issued the following statement:

“Pay discrimination doesn’t just affect women; it hurts us all. Whether they are the sole or primary breadwinners for their family, all women in the workforce should be paid equitably: it is critical to their financial wellbeing. We cannot have a strong economy without equal pay, and I’m glad Gov. Whitmer recognized this and moved quickly to strengthen paychecks for families across the state. This is an excellent first step in the long overdue fight against discriminatory wage practices, and I look forward to continue working on this issue alongside her administration.”
