Court of Claims Judge Douglas Shapiro ruled the practice, used prominently by legislative Republicans in 2018, unconstitutional

LANSING, Mich., July 19, 2022 — Today the Court of Claims ruled the legislative practice of ‘Adopt and Amend’ unconstitutional and ordered two voter initiated laws back into effect as adopted. The following statement comes from House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township).

“This ruling is about hardworking Michiganders and the achievement of long-sought and fair demands. Deep public support went into these voter initiated laws, and all that was stolen by the unconstitutional trickery of Lansing Republicans. The ‘adopt and amend’ strategy was crooked and wrong all along, and when republicans resorted to this deceit to rob the working families of Michigan of fair pay and paid sick leave, it was sickening and truly one of the most frustrating days of my legislative career. I couldn’t be happier to see the court uphold the power of the people and the dignity and respect our working people deserve. We’ve stood together time and again, in stark contrast to the con-men and women who cheated them so badly in 2018 — Lansing Republicans who’ve only ever supported working people under court order.”
